How should I prepare for my massage therapy appointment?
If this is your first appointment, please visit the FORMS page. Fill out the Intake and Health Information Form and the Covid-19 Addendum. Many of the forms are fillable – you may download these forms to your desktop, fill them out, save them, and email them to KneadingSpace@gmail.com. A few forms must be filled out by hand, scanned, and then emailed. Having the forms filled out ahead of time will make the best use of your appointment time.
If you have filled out the initial forms previously, you will only need to complete the COVID Update Form on the day of your appointment. You must also update the Intake and Health Information Form every time you have changes to your medical history. The law does require you to update your medical history on the Intake Form every two years, even if you have not had any significant changes in your health during that time.
Please shower or bathe prior to your appointment.
Please turn off your cell phone during the session. Eliminate as many distractions as you can before the session starts. This will allow you to make the most of your appointment time so you can enjoy your time away from your daily tasks and pressures. Interruptions will bring you back from your “Kneading Space” prematurely or unnecessarily.
What do I need to provide for my session?
Your therapist will supply the massage table, clean linens, blanket, massage lubricants, and anything else needed for your session. Have water on hand so that you can hydrate well before and after your session. It is not recommended that you drink water or other beverages during your session.
Where will my massage session take place?
Your therapy session will take place in the comfort and safety of your own home. You decide where you would like to receive your massage. A suitable space is private, warm, comfortable, and quiet. A clear area of 12 feet x 10 feet is ideal. Soft music may be played to help you relax. You will lie on a massage table specifically designed for your comfort.
How long will my session last?
Kneading Space sessions are available for a minimum of 1 hour, and then increase in 30 minute intervals. Your session will last as long as the time you scheduled (cost details for sessions may be founds on the RATES page). Session times indicate the amount of time you will be receiving treatment and don’t include the time it takes the therapist to setup or take down equipment.
Must I be completely undressed?
Most massage and bodywork techniques are traditionally performed with the client unclothed; however, what you wear is entirely up to you. You should undress to your level of comfort. You will be properly draped with a sheet and blanket during the entire session.
Will the therapist be present when I disrobe?
The therapist will leave the room while you undress, relax onto the table, and cover yourself with a clean sheet and blanket.
Will I be covered during the session?
You will be properly draped with a sheet and blanket at all times to keep you warm and comfortable. Only the area being worked on will be exposed.
What parts of my body will be massaged?
A typical full-body session will include work on your back, arms, legs, feet, hands, head, neck, and shoulders. You may choose not to have a full body session and only have certain areas of your body massaged. The therapist may also make recommendations to help you maximize the benefits of your therapy session.
What will the massage or bodywork feel like?
A relaxing Swedish massage is often a baseline for clients. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. The oil also helps hydrate your skin. You should communicate immediately if you feel any discomfort so that another approach may be taken. Massage and bodywork are most effective when your body is not resisting.
Are there different kinds or types of massage and bodywork?
There are numerous types of massage and bodywork; various techniques utilize different strokes, including basic rubbing strokes, rocking movement, posture and movement re-education, application of pressure to specific points, and more. Your therapist is happy to discuss which methods may be most appropriate for you so that you can choose from the services available.
What should I do during the massage or bodywork session?
If you have any questions regarding the therapy session or about the particular technique you are receiving, feel free to ask at any time. During the massage, make yourself comfortable. The practitioner will either gently move you or tell you what is needed throughout the session (such as lifting your arm). Many people close their eyes and completely relax, communicating only if/when they need more or less pressure, another blanket, or anything else relevant to the session.
How will I feel after the massage or bodywork session?
Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains developed from tension or repetitive activity. After an initial period of feeling slowed down, people often experience increased energy, heightened awareness, and greater productivity which can last for days. Please be careful at the end of the session, and let your therapist know if you are experiencing any weakness or dizziness. It is always a good idea to drink a large glass of water after a therapy session.
What are the benefits of massage and bodywork?
Massage and bodywork can help release chronic muscular tension and pain, improve circulation, increase joint flexibility, reduce mental and physical fatigue and stress, promote faster healing of injured muscular tissue, improve posture, and reduce blood pressure. Massage and bodywork is also known to promote better sleep, improve concentration, reduce anxiety and create an overall sense of well-being. For additional information, see the BENEFITS OF MASSAGE page.
Are there any medical conditions that would make massage or bodywork inadvisable?
Yes. That’s why it’s imperative that, before you begin your session, the practitioner asks general health questions. It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor’s care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage or bodywork prior to any session. Depending on the condition, approval from your doctor may be required.
What kind of lotions or lubricants will be used on my skin during my massage?
Massage cremes, gels, and lotions used are generally from the Biotone line of products. All massage lubricants are hypoallergenic and have very minimal fragrance. Which exact lubricant is used depends upon the massage modalities and techniques that will be used during the session, the amount of glide desired on the skin, and the optimum traction needed to properly manipulate the tissue. If you have a preference for a particular lubricant or wish to use strictly organic products please let your therapist know.
What precautions are being taken because of COVID 19?
Please visit the COVID 19 page on this website for a complete description of the precautions being taken to limit the impact of the pandemic on your massage session. All linens, massage table and equipment, massage lubricant containers, and anything else that is exposed to the air during sessions with a client are thoroughly cleaned after each and every use according to the recommended guidelines of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS). Masks must be worn by the client and the therapist during the entire session.
